Neuropsychological assessments have several components:
Clinical interview - Discussion of your medical and developmental history, schooling, work, family, mental health and the cognitive difficulties you are noticing (as well as any areas of strength).
Questionnaires - Completed by you and often others who know you well (with your consent this may include teachers for child assessments, or people who knew you as a child for adult assessments).
Review of reports or records - Includes school reports, medical records or previous assessment reports.
Psychometric assessment - Completion of a range of tasks and activities to investigate different thinking skills, and your strengths and weaknesses.
The first assessment appointment will take approximately 5 hours to complete. After your assessment, your Psychologist will compile the results and then finalise the outcomes.
Results are shared in two ways:
Feedback appointment - This is an opportunity to discuss the results and recommendations, and answer any questions you might have. A summary report may be provided to assist in sharing key outcomes and next steps.
Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment report is then written and sent to you and your referrer.
Feedback appointments take approximately 45-60 minutes via Telehealth. Your feedback appointment will usually be scheduled 2-4 weeks after your assessment, and we aim to have comprehensive reports finalised within 4 weeks of the date of the feedback appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions.
-What (and who) should I bring?
It is a long day, so it is a good idea to bring drinks and snacks: some people like to bring lunch, though there are also a couple of cafes available on the Hollywood site.
You should bring anything you would usually have with you if completing paperwork and having a discussion, such as glasses and hearing aids
Copies of recent medical letters/reports can be useful if they are relevant to the problem areas that you wish to be assessed for
We often ask that you bring copies of school reports, especially from Year 4 to Year 8 as these are especially formative years
If there is someone that helps you feel more comfortable then it is fine to bring them, or if there is someone (such as a parent) that can describe how you were in childhood and any developmental issues you may have had
If the client to be assessed is a child (<18 years old), we ask that they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who should remain onsite for the duration of the assessment.
-Should I take my medication as usual?
This is a question we are often asked, and the answer is usually ‘yes’. If you take your medications most days and you want to know what is your ‘usual’ level of functioning when on your medication then you should take them
Occasionally people want to know something like “Would I function well if I am not taking my ADHD medication?”. In these cases you could talk to your consultant about coming off the medication a few days before the assessment
If you are at all unsure about whether you should be assessed while on your usual medication then do please feel free to ask.
- How much does a neuropsychological assessment cost?
Routine referrals = $1800, and Complex Referrals = $2250. If you are unsure which applies to you, or would like to discuss a potential referral, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
We will take a non-refundable deposit prior to your appointment. This is deducted from the total cost of the assessment once completed.
You may choose to pay the balance of the assessment fee at the time of assessment, or opt to pay in two instalments (at assessment, and at feedback). Payment can be made via Eftpos/Credit Card or bank transfer.
Unfortunately there is no Medicare rebate available for neuropsychological assessment at this time, although some Private Health Insurers may offer a rebate.
While we do accept referrals from Police or DVA, we ask that the fee is paid in full at the time of the assessment. An invoice will be provided to you to assist with claiming the amount back.
- How do I book an appointment?
Please call Kristen at Suite 306 on 08 9389 9617, or email a copy of your referral to [email protected].
Please note that our assessment appointments are always on Thursdays. We aim to give you plenty of notice of the appointment, and we are flexible around which Thursday you are available to attend.
- What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?
We understand life happens! If you are unable to attend your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible by calling Kristen at Suite 306, or emailing our team directly. The sooner we are contacted, the more likely we will be able to fill your appointment.
If you give us less than two working days’ notice of a cancellation or reschedule then there is a chance we may be unable to fill your appointment: if this is the case then we would retain the $550 booking deposit to cover our costs. However, if we are able to fill the appointment then we can return the $550.
If you are unable to attend your original appointment, we aim to reschedule it to our next available appointment date and do our best to minimise any additional delays.
